Grad School Dropout + (So Far) Failed Entrepreneur
Hello there!
My name is Ricky Tan, and I dropped out of engineering grad school (twice) to pursue a startup that ultimately failed after 4 years of hard work.
It's been 3 years since then.
So far, I've been a full-time software freelancer, I started a blog about personal finance and side hustles, worked in another startup, taught as a professional tennis coach, got hired as a systems engineer, taught kickboxing for exercise part-time, started indie game development, started a YouTube channel for it, and honestly a bunch of other side projects too long to list here.
In this short yet significant amount of time of my personal journey, I'd like to share a little piece of personal truth I discovered with you:
I Don't Fit in a Box... and Probably Neither Do You
Have you ever tried to find your purpose?
You know, the perfect job title next to your name? The thing you tell people when they ask, "What do you do?" The one thing you were meant to do?
Neither have I...
I'm convinced that people don't really have a singular purpose. Everyone has a multitude of worthwhile interests that change over time.
Yet many avoid pursuing them, citing statements like:
"Stay in your lane."
"Focus on your strengths."
"Do only one thing well."
The truth is...
Life is an RPG with No Level-Cap and Unlimited Multiclassing
It's tempting to simply check off the boxes and live in the comfortable bubble of a degree, a job, a house, a car, etc. as we resign ourselves to run the rest of our lives on autopilot.
But life can be so much more than that.
As human beings, we don't have to stop growing. The only times we stop growing is when we prevent ourselves from doing so.
What I Write About
I'm here to convince you to multiclass to your heart's content in life!
Reaching your highest potential requires personal development and continuous improvement, which are my main topics.
To keep us responsible and planning ahead, I'll also mix in some personal finance and productivity.
Lastly, to get the courage up, I'll share some valuable life stories and experiences that allowed me to face challenges head-on and learn from mistakes quickly. So sit back, relax, grab some coffee, read, enjoy, and consider subscribing! I wish you good luck on building yourself a min/maxed life you enjoy :) Thank you for being here. Sincerely, – Ricky
